One Chocolate Cake
July 2nd
"I made you a birthday cake!" I said.
...
Two layers. Chocolate. Chocolate. Chocolate icing. Cherry on top.
I slid the cake carefully off the board onto the pedestal. I could hardly wait.
...
July 3rd
"Happy Birthday!" I said.
Two slices of chocolate cake followed by two slices of chocolate cake. It was Roberto's birthday. Two slices each. How could we not?

July 4th
Two slices chocolate cake.

July 8th
I eyed up the chocolate cake. Curious. Under cover it looked fine. It had tasted wonderful day after day after sweltering day. It just sat there. Under the dome. On the counter. I felt vexed.
"I'm worried about the cake." I said.
"It's fine." He said.
"How is it lasting this long sitting out on the counter? I'm surprised it hasn't melted or molded." I said.
"If you're worried, put it in the fridge." He said.
Two slices chocolate cake.
I slid the cake onto a plate. We tented with three toothpicks and a layer of plastic wrap. Into the back of the fridge.

July 10th
"This is the last of it." I said.
"It was a really good cake." He said.
"It was." I said.
Two slices chocolate cake.
...
Nine days. One chocolate cake. Two people. Eighteen slices. I still can't believe it lasted that long.
That is impressive! As a fan of cold cake myself, I would have popped that puppy into the fridge a day or two in--chilled frosting is one of the best indulgences in the world, at least for me.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe it lasted that long either, it looks so good I would have been tempted to eat it all on July 3rd. Happy Belated Birthday Roberto.
ReplyDeleteoooh delicious looking chocolate cake! and that cherry topper is cute.
ReplyDeleteGlad you are posting again. The perfect long-lasting gift for Roberto!
ReplyDeletei have to give you props for making it last that long. i don't know i could have kept it in my house, looking that divine!
ReplyDeletebeautiful cake! It wouldn't last that long in my house, we're all chocolate addicts :)
ReplyDeleteYour cake looks incredible. I am the birthday cake baker both for myself and my husband - nothing beats a homemade birthday cake - I wish I could walk right through my screen to to taste that icing. Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteYum! So funny, I've been watching and wondering about the coconut cupcakes sitting under a cake dome on my counter since Saturday - I usually send the 'extras' into the office with FHFB so we don't end up eating them all. Your cake looks perfectly delicious! Ciao, bella!
ReplyDeleteone chocolate cake, one cherry on top....Never would have lasted that long in this greedy chocolate-loving household....excellent pacing you two !!!
ReplyDeletemaybe your cake's high degree of chocolate has preservative powers!?!
nice to have the musings of Amuse-Bouche back...
Ha! I am cracking up! I thought my almond cake lasted a long time, but you outdid me. That's 'some' chocolate cake. I want one.
ReplyDeleteI am amazed it lasted so long! I'm not so good with sweets and keeping them around so I give them away. Isn't that totally silly? This cake looks amazing!
ReplyDeleteThe cherry on top says, "as if the cake isn't beautiful enough- here I am!' Gorgeous photos and delicious looking cake. Yum!
ReplyDeleteWelcome back Tracy. That must have been one delicious cake! Happy birthday to Roberto!
ReplyDeleteI missed you. Aha with a cherry on top, everything is better with a cherry on top. What a nice cherry too and handsome looking cake. Happy birthday, tanti auguri Roberto.
ReplyDeleteelizabeth - It was nicer with chilled frosting. I should have done it earlier...
ReplyDeleteKath - I could have gone for a third piece. It was hard stopping at two. I should have made the slices larger.
elizabeth - I'm really looking forward to making this again.
Michele - I think I've converted him into a lover of dessert. Before me, he didn't do cakes and such so much. I'm a terrible influence :)
carolyn - I must confess that we also had a few donuts and pastries in the house. That kept us in check :)
M. - Chocolate is one of my addictions as well. I felt like a junky the entire time the cake was in the house. Nervous and anxious for the next piece.
laura - Thank you... 1 stick melted butter. 3 cups powdered sugar. 2/3 cup cocoa powder. 1/3 cup milk. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. It was amazing.
Frog Hollow Farm Girl - I would check your cupcakes. It's amazing how long some things last. The power of butter and sugar!
nancy - Thanks Nancy. I really think it must have been all that sugar that preserved the cake so well :)
Denise - Vanessa's almond cake is on my list. Thanks for the reminder.
redmenace - Giving them away is nice. I should do that with the batch of brownies I made last night...
Nicolette - :) I was thinking of putting more cherries, but stopped at just the one. One felt just right.
magda - It was the best chocolate cake to ever come out our kitchen. Dangerous having something so good in one's arsenal.
rachel - Thanks, R. It felt like a cherry on top sort of cake :)
I admire your tiny slices. They must have been tiny to get 18 out of 1 cake, right? Or maybe you made a mega-cake? Just looking at the pictures I can;t imagine it lasting so many days in my house! No way.
ReplyDeleteYou made a good thing last awhile. It's beautiful. I loved the way you did this post-nice!
ReplyDeleteSalivating!
ReplyDeleteKatie - They were slices of moderation :)
ReplyDeleteVelva - Thank you Velva :)
Annalyn - :) Chocolate is good.
That mush have been a VERY large cake! It's so nice that you two were able to keep eating and keep celebrating together. I would have had to freeze it after the first two slices but I admire your perseverance!
ReplyDeleteDana - We were totally committed to every last crumb :)
