A Pound of Mussels

We were eager. A pot of mussels. A bowl of bread (baguette and leftover biscuits).

Chew. Slow down. It's just us.

The liquor was a sultry blend of butter, wine, parsley, shallot, lemon, and bacon.

We dipped and soaked crusty slices until they were melt in our mouth ready.

Roberto scraped the bottom, pulling up hidden pieces of bacon and shallot, flecked with parsley. A rogue mussel or two. Making up a biscuit bruschetta. His eyes wide. You genius—I thought—I said. I was envious, of course.

Chew.

We'd slow down for a moment. But only for a moment.

A pound of mussels. Sunday.

    1. What's nice is that Mussels are so cheap—very easy to repeat.

  2. oh, pretty much my perfect meal! we always buy more than seems possible to eat and create a satisfyingly huge pile of shells. Lately we've tried a Jamie variation using cider instead of wine and cream alongside the bacon/shallot.

  7. The broth sounds perfect. Nothing like dipping a crusty baguette into a pot of moules. Darn I miss that.

    1. Thanks, Julie. I'm sure you'd have a lovely twist in your pot of mussels which would then inspire me.

  9. Mussels are the best - I get so impatient in the summer when you're not supposed to eat them, and then I go wild for them when September comes around! Yours look delicious - I think I might have to seek some out for myself now!

  10. When I was 14 I went on a French Exchange in Normandy. My French girl was just horrid and I was so homesick. But I ate so well. We flew to marseille for a few days and I ate Mussels at a bistro near the port and sopped up the liquor with french bread. I still remember the taste. I'd like to sit and eat a pound of mussels cooked by you. Maybe I will one day. I think I am really am coming out of baby vortex now - gone a bit mental it has to be said, happily, but mental no less.

    1. Horrid and homesick...what a memory, though. It's okay to be a little mental. I think that's what keeps us all a bit sane.
